For the sponsored prizes, each sponsor had full autonomy in deciding the winning team, as well as how to distribute the prize (e.g. to split it or not). These prizes were judged completely independently of the Dataverse sponsorship rewards.
The Dataverse sponsorship awards are selected by the Dataverse team. Team judging is based on two rounds of judging: a technical round and a non-technical round. The prizes were distributed so as to award prizes to as many different projects as possible (rather than concentrating prizes on the top projects).
